A typical WhatsApp support chat in India now costs about ₹0.50–₹1 in message fees after Meta's 1 October 2026 change, but ₹15–₹25 in agent time when a human handles it. The message bill rose, yet labour is still 95% or more of your cost per chat, so bot deflection saves far more money than trimming messages.
Support heads are re-running their WhatsApp budgets this month because Meta now charges service replies beyond roughly 1,000 a month at the utility rate. This page gives the per-chat maths with every assumption visible, so you can replace our numbers with yours. For the rule change itself, see WhatsApp service message charges from October 2026.

| Provider fee | ₹0.10 per message | RichAutomate Client Pay; other BSPs vary |
| Business replies per chat | 4 | Greeting, answer, follow-up, close |
| Agent monthly cost | ₹22,000 | Salary plus overheads for an entry-level agent; illustrative |
| Chats one agent closes a month | 1,100 | About 50 a day across concurrent chats; illustrative |

Cost per chat, three ways
| Line | Human agent | Bot resolves fully | Bot first, human on handoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta fee (4 replies × ₹0.115, +GST) | ₹0.54 | ₹0.54 | ₹0.81 (6 replies) |
| Provider fee (₹0.10 × replies) | ₹0.40 | ₹0.40 | ₹0.60 |
| Agent time (₹22,000 ÷ 1,100) | ₹20.00 | ₹0 | ₹20.00 |
| All-in per chat | ≈ ₹20.94 | ≈ ₹0.94 | ≈ ₹21.41 |
Before 1 October the Meta line was ₹0 for these replies. The change adds roughly half a rupee to a human-handled chat, about 2.6% of its cost. A chat the bot resolves on its own costs about one twentieth of a human-handled one.
What 10,000 chats a month cost
| Bot resolution rate | Human chats | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (all human) | 10,000 | ≈ ₹2,09,400 |
| 30% | 7,000 | ≈ ₹1,49,400 |
| 50% | 5,000 | ≈ ₹1,09,400 |
| 70% | 3,000 | ≈ ₹69,400 |
Figures use ₹0.94 for a bot-resolved chat and ₹20.94 for a human one, and ignore the free first ~1,000 service messages, so real bills are slightly lower. Going from no bot to 50% resolution saves about ₹1,00,000 a month here, while the whole October message increase on 10,000 human chats is about ₹5,400.

Where WhatsApp sits against other support channels
- Phone support ties one agent to one caller, so an agent handles far fewer contacts per hour than on chat, where several conversations run at once.
- Email has near-zero sending cost but slower resolution and more back-and-forth per ticket.
- SMS is one-way in practice and needs DLT registration; it suits alerts, not conversations. Compare rates in our SMS API pricing guide.
- WhatsApp combines chat concurrency with bots, buttons and order lookups, which is why its cost per resolved query stays low even after October.
Five ways to lower cost per chat
- Automate the top five questions. Order status, delivery date, refund status, store hours and pricing usually make up a large share of volume. A shared team inbox with a bot in front handles these without an agent.
- Use buttons and lists. One tap replaces a typed exchange and cuts replies per chat.
- Send one complete reply. Merge "checking" and "here you go" into one message.
- Route new customers through the free entry point. Chats that start from a click-to-WhatsApp ad or Facebook Page button are free for 72 hours. See free entry point conversations.
- Avoid per-seat pricing. Seat fees add a fixed cost to every agent. Our look at per-agent seat pricing shows how it adds up.

Bottom line
The October change is real but small per chat. Budget about ₹0.50 extra per human-handled conversation, then put your effort into bot resolution, where the savings are measured in lakhs rather than hundreds. RichAutomate has no platform fee and no per-seat charge: you pay ₹0.10 per message plus Meta at cost, with a visual bot builder and team inbox included. Start free or see the pricing page.
