WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly users worldwide (Meta, Q1 2025 earnings call), and India is its largest market with 500M+ users. On the business side, 200M+ businesses use the WhatsApp Business app, and since 1 July 2025 the WhatsApp Business API bills per delivered template message instead of per 24-hour conversation.
This page collects the WhatsApp statistics that matter for 2026 planning: users, markets, business adoption, API pricing and engagement. Every figure names its source and the date it was published. Where a number is an estimate or an industry claim rather than an official Meta figure, we say so. Meta rarely updates its headline numbers, so a "latest" stat can be one or two years old, and the date column tells you how fresh each one is.

How many people use WhatsApp in 2026?
The most recent official number is "more than 3 billion" monthly active users, stated by Mark Zuckerberg on Meta's Q1 2025 earnings call in April 2025. That is the figure to quote. Meta has not published a newer headline count since, so any "3.5 billion in 2026" number you see online is an estimate, not a Meta statement.
For context, the milestones Meta has confirmed over time:
- 1 billion monthly users in February 2016
- 2 billion users in February 2020
- 3 billion+ monthly users in April 2025
Growth has slowed as WhatsApp saturates its biggest markets. The more useful signal for businesses is no longer how many people have the app, but how much time and commerce happens inside it: support chats, order updates, payments and catalog browsing.
Messages per day
Meta's last official figure is over 100 billion messages a day, shared in October 2020. It has not been updated in public since. If you cite it, cite the 2020 date with it.
WhatsApp statistics for India
India is WhatsApp's biggest single market by a wide margin. Meta said in December 2024 that WhatsApp has more than 500 million users in India. DataReportal's Digital 2025 report put the figure at 535.8 million in February 2025, and industry estimates for 2026 sit around 550 million+. With India's internet user base above 900 million (IAMAI-Kantar, 2025), more than half of all Indian internet users are on WhatsApp.
A few India-specific numbers that matter for businesses:
- India accounts for roughly 63% of WhatsApp Business app downloads, about 481M of ~764M cumulative downloads (DemandSage, 2025).
- NPCI removed the WhatsApp Pay user cap on 31 December 2024, after raising it from 40M (2020) to 100M (2022). Payments inside chat are now open to the full user base.
- Meta launched Business AI on WhatsApp for Indian small businesses in May 2026, an AI agent that answers customers from the business's catalog and details.

WhatsApp Business statistics
WhatsApp runs two business products, and their numbers are often mixed up:
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business Platform (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Small businesses, one phone | Growing and large businesses, teams, automation |
| Official scale figure | 200M+ monthly business users (Meta) | Meta does not publish an account count |
| Cost | Free | Per delivered template message, plus provider fee |
| Bulk broadcasts, chatbots, CRM | Limited (broadcast lists, quick replies) | Yes, through a provider like RichAutomate |
| Multiple agents on one number | A few linked devices | Unlimited, through a shared inbox |
The API does not have a public user count, but Meta's financials show how fast it is growing. Meta reports WhatsApp business messaging inside its "Family of Apps – other revenue" line, which reached $510 million in Q1 2025. Meta has credited that growth mainly to WhatsApp paid messaging.

WhatsApp Business API pricing statistics
The biggest change to WhatsApp economics in years took effect on 1 July 2025. Meta stopped charging per 24-hour conversation and started charging per delivered template message. The rules now look like this:
- Marketing templates are charged on every delivery. This is the most expensive category.
- Utility templates (order, payment and appointment updates) are charged per delivered message, and from 1 October 2026 that includes templates sent inside an open 24-hour customer service window.
- Authentication templates (OTPs) are charged per delivery at a low rate.
- Service messages, meaning free-form replies within 24 hours of the customer's last message, are free.
In India, Meta's rates start from about ₹0.115 per utility or authentication message. Marketing messages cost several times more. Meta revises its rate card periodically, so check the current card before you budget. Which category a template falls into decides most of your bill, and our template categories guide covers how Meta classifies them.
On top of Meta's charge, your provider adds its own fee. That fee is where most of the price difference between providers comes from. See our breakdown of how much the WhatsApp Business API costs in India for a worked monthly budget.
WhatsApp engagement statistics (and how to read them)
Engagement numbers are where WhatsApp statistics get unreliable. The most repeated one, a "98% open rate", is an industry claim that circulates between marketing platforms. Meta has not published it. The same goes for most "45–60% click-through" figures.
What is well established:
- WhatsApp messages land in an app people open many times a day, next to chats with friends and family, not in a crowded promotions folder.
- The API gives you sent, delivered and read status for every message, so you can measure your own open rate instead of trusting an industry average.
- Two-way replies and tappable buttons remove the step where a customer has to copy a link or call a number.
The honest benchmark is your own: send a campaign, measure read and reply rates from the delivery reports, and compare the result with SMS or email for the same audience. Our WhatsApp vs SMS cost comparison shows how to compare channels on cost per result.
What these numbers mean for your business
Three takeaways for 2026:
- Your customers are already there. In India, more than half of internet users are on WhatsApp. Reaching them does not require a new app download.
- The billing change favours transactional use. Utility messages cost about Rs 0.115 and the first ~1,000 service replies a month are free (charged at the utility rate beyond that from 1 October 2026), so order updates and support stay cheap. Marketing broadcasts carry the cost, so segment and target them.
- The provider layer decides your total cost. Meta's per-message rate is the same for everyone. Platform fees, setup charges and per-message markups differ widely. Our list of the best WhatsApp Business API providers in India compares them.
Methodology and sources
We use a three-tier source rule for every statistic on this page:
| Tier | Source type | Examples used here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Official Meta statements and filings | Earnings calls, quarterly results, Meta pricing documentation |
| 2 | Established research publishers and regulators | DataReportal, IAMAI-Kantar, NPCI circulars |
| 3 | Industry estimates and trackers | Download trackers, 2026 user projections |
Tier 3 figures are labelled as estimates. We do not publish engagement or revenue figures that we cannot trace to a named source. We review this page whenever Meta publishes a new official figure.
