Free WhatsApp Business API India 2026: What's Really ₹0

There is no free WhatsApp Business API in India, and any vendor who says otherwise is describing their own software, not the channel. Meta charges for every marketing, utility and authentication template that leaves your number, and no Business Solution Provider can waive that cost. What genuinely can be ₹0 is the layer above Meta — the platform: onboarding, monthly software fees and per-user seats. That is the only part a BSP controls, and where "free" is either real or marketing.

Free WhatsApp Business API India 2026: What's Really ₹0

1. What "free" actually means in the WhatsApp API stack

The WhatsApp Business API is two stacked bills, not one. Confusing them is why so many Indian businesses sign up for a "free plan" and still get an invoice in month one.

The Meta layer. Meta owns the channel. It hosts your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), your verified display name, your message templates and your quality rating. It meters what you send and bills for it. Creating a WABA, registering a phone number, submitting templates for review and completing Meta Business Verification cost nothing directly — sending does.

The platform (BSP) layer. This is the software you actually log into: the team inbox, the campaign builder, the chatbot or flow builder, analytics, webhooks and the REST API. Every vendor prices this layer differently, and it is the only layer where ₹0 is a real possibility.

So the honest version of the question is not "is the WhatsApp API free?" It is "how much of my bill is Meta, and how much is the vendor sitting in front of Meta?" For a full breakdown of both layers, read our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing in India for 2026.

2. What Meta charges in 2026

Meta has moved to per-template pricing, so the unit you are charged for is closer to "one message delivered" than "one 24-hour window opened". Three paid categories exist, priced very differently:

  • Marketing — offers, launches, re-engagement, abandoned-cart nudges. The most expensive category by a wide margin, and the one Meta rate-limits hardest on quality.
  • Utility — order confirmations, shipping updates, payment reminders and appointment alerts tied to an existing transaction. Substantially cheaper than marketing.
  • Authentication — OTPs and login codes, priced in the same low band as utility in India.

The genuinely free part on Meta's side: when a customer messages you first, you get a 24-hour service window in which your replies are not charged as templates. Free-form support conversations inside that window cost nothing at the Meta layer. That is real, it is Meta policy, and it is the single biggest lever on a support-heavy Indian bill — answer inside the window instead of re-opening the conversation later with a paid template.

Meta publishes India rates in USD and revises them periodically, so treat any rupee figure — including a vendor quote — as a snapshot, not a contract. For the arithmetic on a normal month, see WhatsApp Business API cost per month in India.

3. What "free plan" BSPs actually charge you

We are not naming competitors or quoting their numbers — those change constantly. The patterns are stable, and you can check any quote against this list:

  • Setup or onboarding fee. A one-time charge to connect your WABA — work that is largely automated and takes minutes.
  • Monthly platform fee. Many Indian BSPs charge a fixed monthly software fee on top of Meta's rates, usually tiered so the API, webhooks or the chatbot builder only unlock on a higher plan.
  • Per-user seats. The bill grows every time you add an agent, which quietly penalises exactly the thing you bought WhatsApp for: more people answering customers faster.
  • Markup on Meta rates. The most common one. You are billed a per-message price that bundles Meta's cost plus an undisclosed margin. Ask the vendor directly: is this Meta's rate at cost, or yours?
  • Contact or MAU-based pricing. Billed on how many contacts sit in the database rather than how many messages you actually send — painful for seasonal businesses.
  • Annual prepay and credit expiry. A "free" tier that needs a yearly commitment, or wallet credits that lapse, is not free.

None of these are scams; they are business models. But a plan labelled free can still carry a floor cost of several thousand rupees a month before a single message is sent — and who absorbs that cost is worth deciding deliberately, as we cover in client-pay vs SaaS-pay WhatsApp billing in India.

4. The genuinely ₹0 parts at RichAutomate

RichAutomate is usage-only. There is no setup fee, no monthly platform fee and no per-user seat charge — add your whole support team on day one and the platform bill does not move. You pay per message, and you choose how Meta's side is handled:

  • Client Pay — ₹0.10 per message. Meta bills the conversation directly to the customer's own Meta account; you pay RichAutomate ₹0.10 per message as the platform fee. Best for agencies and anyone who wants Meta's cost visible and un-marked-up.
  • SaaS Pay — ₹1.20 per marketing message, ₹0.30 per utility or authentication message. One all-in rupee rate, nothing to reconcile with Meta separately.
  • Service-window replies are free on both models. Customer messages you, you answer inside 24 hours — ₹0 from us.

One thing we will not claim: that Meta's own cost disappears. Under Client Pay it lands on the paying Meta account; under SaaS Pay it is already inside the rupee rate above. It is never ₹0, at any vendor.

5. Free trial vs free forever — what you actually get

These are two different things and the distinction matters when you budget.

Free forever at RichAutomate means the platform layer: ₹0 setup, ₹0 monthly, ₹0 per seat, for as long as you use the product. It does not expire and it does not depend on volume.

The 14-day free trial plus 100 free credits is the sending allowance on top. Those credits are enough to connect a number, get templates approved, run a small test broadcast to your own team, wire up a chatbot flow, and confirm delivery reports and webhooks behave as your stack needs. It is a real production test, not a sandbox.

What a trial cannot skip: you still need a Meta Business account, a phone number not currently active on the consumer WhatsApp app, and Meta Business Verification. For an Indian business going live at scale, GST registration is effectively required for verification — you can trial without it, but plan for it before you commit to a launch date. And note that no provider, including us, can promise a number will never be restricted; that depends on Meta's quality rating and on you only messaging people who opted in.

6. How to estimate your real monthly bill

Take a small D2C store in a normal month: 500 order and shipping updates (utility), 200 promotional messages to an opted-in list (marketing), and roughly 300 support replies that all happen inside the 24-hour service window.

On SaaS Pay: 500 utility × ₹0.30 = ₹150. 200 marketing × ₹1.20 = ₹240. 300 service-window replies = ₹0. Platform fee = ₹0. Total ≈ ₹390 for the month, all-in.

On Client Pay: 700 billable messages × ₹0.10 = ₹70 to RichAutomate, plus whatever Meta charges the paying Meta account directly at its own published rates. Lower platform cost, one more invoice to track.

Now run the same 700 messages against a quote carrying a monthly platform fee and three agent seats. The per-message cost may look similar; the floor is what separates them, and the floor is charged in months you send nothing. Put your own volumes into the WABA cost calculator before you sign anything — it takes about a minute and it is the fastest way to see which model wins for your mix of marketing versus utility traffic.

The short answer: free WhatsApp Business API means a free platform, never free messages. Judge vendors on the floor cost, and on whether Meta's rate is passed through or marked up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business API free in India?

No. Meta charges for every marketing, utility and authentication template you send, and that cost exists at every provider. What can be free is the platform layer — setup, monthly software fee and per-user seats — which at RichAutomate is ₹0.

Which WhatsApp messages are actually ₹0?

Replies you send inside the 24-hour service window that opens when a customer messages you first. Those are free at the Meta layer and free at RichAutomate on both Client Pay and SaaS Pay. Once the window closes, reaching that customer again needs a paid template.

What does RichAutomate charge per message?

On SaaS Pay, ₹1.20 per marketing message and ₹0.30 per utility or authentication message, all-in. On Client Pay, ₹0.10 per message as the platform fee while Meta bills the conversation directly to the customer's own Meta account. Setup, monthly platform fee and seats are ₹0 on both.

What do I get in the 14-day free trial?

Full platform access plus 100 free credits — enough to connect your WABA, get templates approved, run a test broadcast, build a chatbot flow and verify webhooks and delivery reports end to end.

Do I need GST to use the WhatsApp Business API in India?

You can run a trial without it, but for an Indian business going live, GST registration is effectively required for Meta Business Verification. Treat it as a prerequisite when you plan your launch date, not an optional extra.
